When dealing with separation or divorce from a partner, the emotions and tensions are sometimes running high. The most difficult issue for many parents is to ensure children are not caught up in the dispute. It is essential for children to be protected from the animosity that is often felt. Children pick up on even the most subtle of comments and very often blame themselves for either the separation itself or causing a reaction from one parent after saying to that parent what had happened during their latest visit. Effective and meaningful coparenting is essential to protect children from emotional harm which could lead to those children struggling with their self confidence and relationship issues later in life.
Parents must be able to communicate to be able to co-parent. Parenting Apps are a welcome tool which include facilities for family chats, parents only chat, sharing videos, photographs and most importantly a mutual calendar.
If as parents you are struggling to communicate or failing to see the effect of yours or your ex-partner’s behaviour has upon children, there are tools online to assist with this. CAFCASS (Government Advisory Service) have devised an online course, which is free and can be undertaken at any time. https://www.planningtogether.cafcass.gov.uk/ It is helpful for both parties to attend the course. All parents who go to court are Ordered to attend the Course, and it may even prevent an application from being made at all if it is attended before an application is made. It is important to remember, it is both parents’ responsibility to protect their children from harm.
